Fall break came with one request from Charlotte: a waterpark, and friends to go with. Great Wolf Lodge in Scottsdale covered both, and it turned out the whole place was mid-costume for Howl-O-Ween — a balloon spider the size of a car in the lobby, a scarecrow at the Adventure Park, pumpkins stacked on every shelf. Three days, three very different speeds.

👪 The Crew

  • Me — driver, raft-pusher, and the one holding everyone’s paw bands.
  • Charlotte — age 7, chlorinated from Monday noon to Wednesday checkout.
  • GiGi, Sam, and Nate — cousins on deck.
  • Shirley and Elena — ran the lazy river raft like a tugboat crew.
  • Abby and Lucia — came for the big day and brought the wave-pool energy.

🐺 Monday — Check-In Day

We rolled in a little after noon, and Charlotte celebrated the parking lot with a full set of jumping jacks before we’d even unloaded the car. Paw bands scanned, we were in the park hours before the room was ready, which is exactly the right order of operations.

Shirley, Elena, GiGi, Nate, and Sam met us at the pool, and the afternoon became a loop: the big yellow raft down the lazy river, the rope bridge, the floating logs, repeat. The raft was the main event — Shirley and Elena steered, Charlotte and Sam sat up front and took the splash.

The room was a Wolf Den, with the bunk nook Charlotte claimed in about four seconds. Dinner was pizza from the lodge’s pizza counter, eaten on the couch with everyone in wolf ears, which is the only correct way to eat pizza at a place called Great Wolf Lodge.

After dark we wandered the lobby, where the balloon spider hangs over everything, then hit the Adventure Park for the scarecrow photo and a wander past the dragon. We closed the night with ice cream, just the two of us, at the counter by the arcade.

🎃 Tuesday — The Big Day

Breakfast was Butters, just me and Charlotte: pancakes and eggs for me, a kids’ menu to color for her. Then back to the lodge, where everyone came back for round two — and Abby and Lucia joined in. This was the loud day.

Tuesday sticker sheet — the group shot, underwater kiss, Abby and Charlotte, the hot tub, Shirley and Elena, Mavrix, the lazy river, the wave pool Tuesday, as a sticker sheet. Peel and keep.

The wave pool got the most time. Charlotte and Lucia went under and came back up laughing every single set, Sam held court in the hot tub, and Abby and I traded off between the water and the chairs. By mid-afternoon the kids had worked out that the lazy river inner tubes could hold two if you didn’t mind tipping.

Evening was Mavrix, up the road: the Typhoon motion ride, a Halo cabinet, light guns, and a VR coaster the girls rode twice. Charlotte was asleep about nine minutes after we got back to the room.

🌅 Wednesday — The Quiet Day

Sunrise from the room window, then Butters again, just us. We checked out, left the bags with the bell desk, and went right back into the park for a day with nobody to keep track of but each other.

The outdoor pool was nearly empty, so we took a cabana and did nothing for an hour. That’s the whole report on the cabana.

Then the slides. All of them. She walked up to the top of the tube, climbed in, and went, and then went again, and didn’t skip a single one in the building. I rode the ones that fit a raft for two and let her have the rest.

✅ How It Went

  • Check-in Monday, early pool access — worth it, the room can wait.
  • The crew: GiGi, Sam, Nate, Shirley, Elena on Monday; everyone plus Abby and Lucia Tuesday.
  • Butters both mornings, just us. Charlotte’s order didn’t change.
  • Mavrix Tuesday night — the VR coaster wins.
  • Every slide, checked off, on the quiet day.
  • Checkout Wednesday, then one more full day in the park.

Three days, three speeds: the big raft, the big day, and the quiet one at the end that turned out to be the one she talked about on the drive home.

“It’s not a tumor.” It’s a sugar crash, a sunburn, and a very good fall break.
